My favorite way to experience Oahu is far away from Waikiki, enjoying the funky little towns and near-empty beaches on the North Shore. When I signed up for a workshop in Haleiwa, a fellow film shooter and I decided to rent a VW van and camp on the beach for a few days beforehand. It ended up being an amazing, if unusual, experience and I highly recommend this way of exploring Hawaii! We visited Haleiwa, woke up to the ocean each morning and met some amazing characters.
And I might have even shared a container of poke with a stranger at our campsite when our van broke down!

- Stop by Kahuku Superette for the best poke-to-go.
