We visited Anguilla and St Barts right after our engagement! We flew into St. Maarten and took a water ferry to Anguilla and our vacation started as soon as we landed when we sunned on the boat to the hotel. I recommend the Viceroy Anguilla—comfort, luxury, freedom and the beach right there in front of you. Anguilla is the perfect location for the type of relaxing you do on the beach with a little coconut drink. Splurge on one of the Viceroy’s villas with a private infinity pool overlooking the ocean, and wake up every day to the sound of the waves.
The Viceroy has amazing restaurants, but a quick cab ride takes you into town to enjoy locations off “campus”. The hotel also prepares bike tours around the island, which was a great way to get to know our surroundings.
We took a fun day trip to Sandy Island, which is only accessible via ferry. Sandy Island hosts one tiny bar/restaurant and is surrounded by warm Anguillan water. We sampled the spiny lobster and barbecue shrimp!
For a little more activity, we hopped a ferry to the nearby St. Barts—completely different from Anguilla, but equally wonderful. The ambience is distinctly European as St. Barts is French. Our stay at Hotel Le Toiny, which has ocean view villas and a kind staff, was wonderful. Their truffle pasta is legendary and breakfast was served in our villa every morning.
Downtown St. Barts has amazing restaurants, some of the finest food I’ve ever had, and tons of great shopping (Calypso St. Bart anyone?) and dancing, including the famous Le Ti dance club. Go there on Saturday nights! For dinner try Hotel Eden Rock, that has spotlights on the reefs around it so you can see the fish nibbling at the coral beneath you.
For a great sunny beach and crystal clear waters, head to Gouverneur beach, just be careful driving around, the hills are steep and it is very hard to rent a large car on the tiny island.
