Hidden among the cliffs of spectacular coastline, redwoods and windy highways, Mendocino is a getaway paradise. Getting there takes effort as the drive is slowed by seemingly unending turns and dips in the road, both from the north and the south. But the air is refreshing and sweet and warm enough even in winter to let the windows down and enjoy fragrant forest mixed with salty ocean air. The village itself is set on a cliff plateau overlooking the Pacific. It’s a quiet place with cute tourist shops and restaurants, trails to the beach, and outlook vistas.
MacCallum House is a romantic bed and breakfast right in the heart of the village. Consisting of renovated historic buildings, it is both charming and comfortable with a restaurant and a bar in the main lodge. Once there, guests can leave their cars parked for days as the beach is just a short walk away. Maccallum House operates year round, but the restaurant does close for the month of January.
While Mendocino seems untouched by the fast pace of life most of us are used to, it also offers incredible accommodations and unmatched dining experiences with restaurants both traditional and vegan (and everything in between). And when in the mood for an adventure, one can explore local beaches, hike alongside cliffs with breathtaking views, and even get lost in the redwood forest to the north of the area.
