In November of last year we enjoyed a trip to the southeastern section of The Dominican Republic known as La Romana. The weather was absolutely wonderful with no rainfall at all during our five-day stay. We made our home at the Hotel Be Live Canoa, which sits on a very out-of-shape road along with other all-inclusive resorts. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our hotel so much that we ventured out of the resort only twice during our short trip!
On one adventure we visited La Flor Dominicana Cigar Factory where we were able to see first hand how a premium Dominican cigar is rolled and packaged. Our other outing was an excursion to one of the smaller islands of the Dominican Republic known as Isla Saona, a national reserve sitting several miles south of La Romana. Along the way to the island we made a pit stop at a naturally occurring pool in the middle of the ocean, caused by a hurricane in the 1970’s. It’s a shallow body of water, roughly the size of a football field, where the water rises only about waist-high. It was absolutely stunning to be in luke-warm water with nothing but ocean surrounding us!
I found the best attraction of this trip to be the people. The Dominicans were gracious hosts with warm smiles and giving souls. We befriended our taxi driver who took us to meet his family and drove us to see the un-touristy sections of La Romana, something I profoundly enjoyed and documented. I will most definitely be returning to this little piece of paradise in the near future!
