This past January, my husband and I decided to flee the polar vortex in New York and travel to a much warmer climate. We decided to escape to Sugar Beach, a Viceroy Hotel in St. Lucia, and it was probably one of the best vacations I have ever had. Located on over 100 acres of rain forest and the site of a sugar plantation dating back to the 18th century, Sugar Beach is in the middle of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Pitons.
Sugar Beach was a quick 45 minute drive from St. Lucia’s international airport and what a lovely drive it was! The landscape was so beautiful and so green and the friendly smiles of the locals as we drove past will always be something worth remembering. When we arrived at Sugar Beach we were greeted with the most delicious coconut and cinnamon cocktail which relaxed us instantly. We were then escorted to our gorgeous beach bungalow! From the white, modern decor (including a giant tub in the middle of the room, as well as an outdoor shower) to the hammock and beach loungers right outside our front door, our room an absolute dream. I can’t forget to mention that our view was of the Caribbean Sea and the access we had to rainbows and sunsets was something out of a fairy tale. We are total beach bums so most of our time was spent soaking up the sunshine, trying out a few water sports, snorkeling and walking on the beach. However, we did venture away from our hotel to the Morne Coubaril Estate for an afternoon of ziplining. It was such a fun experience and we loved having the chance to zip through the rain forest!
The three restaurants at Sugar Beach were all different, which was wonderful because it provided great variety when it came to mealtime. My personal favorite was The Bayside because it had more of a relaxed dining atmosphere and was right on the beach.
One other thing I want to mention about our stay at Sugar Beach was the service. It was unlike anything I have ever experienced and I truly felt like I had nothing to worry about. Everything was taken care of for us and the staff’s main goal was to make sure that we relaxed. I look forward to returning to this beautiful piece of paradise and who knows, maybe I’ll even get the chance to photograph someone’s wedding at the resort where Matt Damon renewed his vows!
